Religion is the foundation of family. It doesn't matter which religion you follow, as long as your kids all share the same beliefs. Religion isn't about being selfish, it's about sharing. I've had a happy life and it's all due to my family systems.

"Each of us has two parents, four grandparents, 16 great-grandparents, etc."? I'm a little fuzzy on the math here. I otherwise, the article (and your thesis) seem pretty sweet.

Ben -
Excuse the delay in responding. You are clearly a true believer (confident that there is "One absolute truth"), so I'll save my time and energy and keep this short. Much or your comment strikes me as special pleading. "If you, too, would view A from angle X and B from angle Y, then you would understand."
My overall point is that talk of a great(est) god is human behavior. As one would expect, this behavior is typically infused with human concerns. Including status. God says: Keep me first in line, do not bow down to other gods, etc.

It seems you are not very knowledgeable about the bible. there are two kinds of pride that it talks about. a pride of self( and the achievements made), and Godly pride(same achievements, with a recognition of God working through your skills, along with giving thanks(Boast in the Lord)). You also use an old testament quote, this was during a period when something called the old law was in place. 'put to shame' in this time period can be lineated with 'defeat' in this one, if you want to go into Koine Greek translation(so defeat is not the opposite of pride)...The new law through Christ changes the game.
You try to put God in a box(like many before you): He has human emotions, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Your insidious comment about God condemning pride to protect his own status is absolute hogwash. Why would He be concerned with His self image, or protecting it for that matter? the answer is He is most definitely not, and wouldn't have a reason to(given He created all of us and the earth we walk on)..

He is most concerned about the salvation of our souls and the separation of sin and death from our lives...so when we boast and take pride in ourselves for achieving a victory, we take from the glory that should always be given to Him...

And from a world's viewpoint: we know that pride can turn into an ugly thing. the holocaust. slavery..etc..
So, you can trust in science wholeheartedly and entirely, or you can also trust in the One absolute truth Who remains after we die. it's your choice, but I can tell you by experience that anything else put in the place of God in your life(work, love, intellect, pleasure) will lead you down a treacherous road of self-destruction...and finally, it's not a religion, it's a relationship with your creator...just try reading it without preconceived notions or the thought of those who misuse it for power.. peace to you brother. God bless

God is the opposite of both bears and lions that protect their own, while God gave his own for us. Funny the bible speaks of beasts when speaking of those who are contrary to God, just never thought about infantcide.
